MTBF means mean time between failures.

failure--------------------repair--------------------failure
<------MTTR---------------><-----MTTF----------------->
<--------------------------MTBF---------------------------->

for eg:
the s/w is tested for about 1000hrs and during the time ,the s/w failed  twice.so MTBF value is 500.After the Failure,it takes 5 hrs to rectify the problem on an average,MTTR is 5 hrs.After the rectification,again if it is fails after 495 hrs....

MTBF stands for Mean Time Between Failures.MTBF tells us the most frequent failures within a process.It is the sum of the operational periods divided by the number of observed failures.
