routing is the based on the orders which takes place on discrete manufacturing.  Here the order is based on the quantity whereas rate routing is used especially in reptitive manufacturing which is based on time time period.  Here the cost is calulated pieces/ hr.

Routing is order based costing which is used in discrete manufacturing and rate routing is time based costing used in REM process . in routing standard , parallel and alternative sequence are available but in rate routing only standard and parallel operation available . we use rate routing for REM process because of effective cost calculation .
