To realise a product probably multiple projects may be necessary(Software and hardware) across/same geographies. Hence a product is realised by the successful completion of parallel projects(Software + Hardware).

A project risk is an event with a probability of occurrence(< 100 % but greater than 0 %) that will impact the deliverables/output of a project. A project can be a pure outsourced testing activity or pure GUI/UI development outsourced or a pure hardware board design project.

A product risk is an event with a probability of occurence that will risk the successful introduction of a product(Software product like Windows VISTA from Microsoft or a Consumer electronics product like iPOD from APPLE) commercially.

Examples of product risks are

1: flaws in the product(Quality can be hardware or software)

2:   logistical problem(like major airlines are on strike) due to which the product cannot reach retail stores

3:  new law/restrictions imposed by a certain country or government that only free/open source will be used in the country

4:  Introduction of  new tax laws which makes the product potentially unviable to sell in some markets.

5: Delayed launch of product due to slippages of schedule by one of the project teams(Software or hardware or mechanical ) which makes it uneconomical to miss the market window(Christmas sales in United States/Europe).

Essentially when you have a project risk, it is also a product risk if the output of your project is going to be a part of a bigger product(Software or hardware). Hence project risk is definitely a subset of a product risk

Hi this rajgopal

As per my experience the project risk means the project is done with respect to client requirement or not. If it is not working properly we have to face risk that time
we will analyse and rectify the problem.

Product risk means the product is developed for according to market needs or not. If it is not useful for market needs there is one mistake.
